In his excellent book, Good to Great, Jim Collins details how major US companies such
as Gillette, Kimberly-Clark, Kroger, Walgreens, Wells Fargo, and others transformed
themselves from good companies to great companies. In his five-year study, he sought
to find timeless, universal answers that any organization could use to improve its stature
and performance, possibly to the point of becoming great. Many of the topics covered
in the book are applicable to the entrepreneurial guitarist as well. These principles
apply not just to the big picture of your overall career, but to turning a good CD into a
great CD, a good performance into a great performance, a good song into a great song.

To accomplish our big goals, especially making a million dollars playing the guitar, we need
the help and cooperation of other people. We must face the fact that we alone do not have
sufficient experience, education, and knowledge to do everything necessary to succeed.

In general, people who became highly successful assembled the right people who worked
together to drive them to greatness. Inevitably, few started out with all the right people. But,
they got rid of the wrong people before the bad apples could do significant damage to their
careers. Interestingly, they didn’t determine a destination and then choose people they
thought would get them there. Instead...

Let me clue you in: things are not always going to go well. In fact, at times things are going
to get very bad. Then they’re going to get worse. This tends to be especially true for
musicians in general. One of the essential things you must do throughout your life is to
confront the brutal facts of reality and deal with them. In difficult times, if you continually
make an honest effort to determine the truth of your circumstances, the right decisions to
get you back on the road to success become obvious. If you aren’t confronting reality...

The magic of the Hedgehog Concept comes about from a convergence of  three key
elements:

ELEMENT #1
The thing that you can be
the best in the world at (and, equally important,
understanding and facing up to what you
cannot be the best in the world at).

This is more than being competent or really good at what you do. We are talking about being
the best in the world. The entrepreneurial guitarist asks himself, “If I can’t be the best at it,
why do it at all?” That may sound harsh, but if you think that way, you won’t waste energy and
money pursuing the wrong activities.

Element #1 of your Hedgehog Concept will not be that you will be the best guitarist in the
world. Nor will your concept depend on that. We are not talking about a goal or a strategy to
be the best at something. The hedgehog doesn’t decide what he
wants to be the best at. He
discovers what he
can be the best at.
